The Philadelphia teachers’ union is raising alarms over persistent heating issues in city schools, criticizing the school district for what it calls inadequate responses that are putting both students and staff at risk. Union leaders argue that numerous schools are operating without proper heat, creating unsafe and uncomfortable learning environments.

Union President reported that several buildings have experienced malfunctioning boilers and heating systems, with some schools temporarily closing or adjusting schedules to cope with the cold. Teachers have expressed frustration that repeated complaints have yet to produce a long-term solution.

The district, in response, stated it is deploying maintenance crews and temporary heating measures while working on longer-term infrastructure repairs. However, union representatives insist these fixes are insufficient and are calling for immediate accountability and investment to ensure classrooms remain safe throughout the winter.

Parents and students have also voiced concern, citing disruptions to learning and the physical discomfort caused by low temperatures. The union warns that continued inaction could negatively impact student performance and staff retention.

This dispute highlights a broader issue of aging school infrastructure and funding challenges in urban districts, underscoring the urgency for sustainable solutions. Both sides appear committed to dialogue, but with winter in full swing, pressure is mounting for swift and effective action.
